Our Town
by Thornton Wilder
"This is the way we were in the provinces north of New York at the beginning of the twentieth century; this is the way we were in our growing up and in our marrying, and in our living, and in our dying."
Our Town is set in the small New Hampshire town of Grover's Corners in the early part of the last century and centres round two families, the Gibbs and the Webbs. Against the background of small-town life we follow the lives of George Gibbs and Emily Webb, from adolescence to adulthood, in joy and in sorrow.
Often gently humorous, often intensely moving, and constantly surprising, this play which was first performed in 1938 and won Thornton Wilder a Pulitzer Prize, has deservedly established itself in the top ranks of twentieth century drama.
A beautifully evocative play. A hauntingly beautiful play
