Paris, 1850 ...
Leonidas Fadinard is driving back to his apartment on his wedding morning, when his horse happens to eat a straw hat that is hanging on a tree. The hat belongs to a young married woman who is keeping a - shall we say - rendezvous with a military man. To protect the lady's honour, the bridegroom now has the task of finding an identical hat as quickly as possible. His search, followed everywhere by a bewildered wedding-party, has been described as a "surrealist nightmare".
Will he find a matching hat? Will the lady's honour be saved? Will Fadinard get married, in spite of the chaos that ensues?
